Mining of stage 1 open pit and small adjacent auxiliary pit (Challenger West) was completed in 2004, followed by development of the underground mine.
The Challenger gold project consists of underground mining and a crushing and processing carbon-in-pulp plant.

|The deposit||The ore zone is an elongate, tightly folded, steeply plunging ‘M’ structure hosted by Archaean aluminous metasediments. Geological work indicates that mineralisation is associated with contemporaneous volcanics.|
