Data list

OH_Maplayers1The Data and Infrastructure tab on the Map Layers widget contains around 300 spatial data layers of information and imagery relating to the mineral, petroleum and geothermal industries.

The Map Layers widget cannot be re-sized and where layer names are truncated, the full layer name is shown as a mouse-over.

The most commonly used layers are listed at the top for ease of access. The list order does not reflect draw order. In general, draw order is imagery, polygon (solid filled shapes), line and finally point data. The draw order cannot be changed.

Due to the large number of layers, related layers are grouped under the bold theme headings. As shown selecting the (+) expands the theme heading and shows either a list of layers available or a second level of grouping. Selecting and deselecting the box at either the individual layer or second level group level turns layers on/off. Layers cannot be turned on/off at the black bolded theme heading level.

Note: The manual refresh and active layer functions used in previous releases on SARIG no longer apply.

When any layers are selected within the second level grouping, the box at the heading level is shown as green, indicating that a layer is on within that group.

In the example shown Mineral and/or Opal Exploration Licence Applications along with Mineral and/or Opal Exploration Licences and Pastoral Stations layers have been switched on.

Selecting the Legend tab in the Map Layers widget loads the legend for the displayed (selected) layers. Note that topographic features areOH_Maplayers2 not shown to conserve space.

The example to the left shows the legend for the above layer selection.

Reset map 


The Reset Map tool turns off all selected layers and returns to map view to a full state view with only topography displayed.

Note this differs from the Navigation toolbar, the Full South Australian view icon action (shown of left) which does not turn of selected layers, but does return to full state extent.


OH_Maplayers5How to Access Metadata

Rick click the layer name and select the Metadata option to access Mineral and Resources Metadata Catalog.

Metadata is loosely defined as data about data.  By describing the contents and context of data files, the quality of the original data/files is greatly increased. SARIG data is ANZLIC compliant.

Metadata is traditionally used to describe three aspects of digital documents and data:

  • Definition
  • Structure
  • Administration (custodian, licensing)

For SARIG data layers that are not custodian of the Resources or Energy Division, the metadata provides valuable information pm record attributes, which agency or private sector is responsible for the management of the data, contacts to information and when the data was updated.

All Metadata can be downloaded by selecting the Generate PDF button located on the top right of the metadata record web page.

Downloading map layers

Spatial data layers can be downloaded from SARIG in two ways.

Group Datasets Download:  Right hand mouse click on the top header of the map layer list (displayed as bold black text) and follow prompts to access downloads.

Data formats available:

  • ArcGIS Geodatabase 
  • Web services (WMS/WFS) 

Web services

A Web Service is a standard (protocol) service used to exchange data between applications over the internet. SARIG offers Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) which allows the exchange of geo-referenced maps and features over the internet.

Web Map Service (WMS): serving a styled geo-reference map as an image format, data can be queried to return a simple attribute.

Web Feature Service (WFS): serving a styled geo-reference map where all data features (geometry and attributes are available, any type of geospatial analysis and data can be performed.

To use web services you will need additional mapping software.

  • ERS (Earth Resource Mapping Satellite)

  • Petrosys (Petrosys Software)

Note: note_icon_blue All spatial data layers in SARIG are provided in Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA 94).  GDA 94 is the current Australian coordinate system standard.

Data access

OH_maplayers11Only Minerals and Energy custodian datasets are available for download via SARIG, where datasets are available for download on other government websites a Data Access option has been provided. If no option is available is it recommended to view the metadata for further information.
